Crawling out of the hole
Let's talk a little about addictions. When I quit drinking, the craving did not suddenly go away. It was my coping tool and I desired the taste of hard alcohol so much that there were days I thought I was going to go crazy. Somehow, through all of that, even through the strong desires, I managed never to touch the stuff again. Ok, so maybe replacing the addiction "helped" somehow, although not the best choice. It has been over 20 years since I drank and there are still times I crave it. There are times when a half-pint seems to make it into one of my self-destructive plans. Luckily, those plans have yet to get played out. I don't know how many times I tried to quit smoking. That has to be the worst as it is so easy to stop and start and stop and start. My heart goes out to anyone who is trying to beat that one. I think the last cigarette I smoked was in 2006. I remember it was the year I moved back up here and was living with mom.
